Glossary

In order to help those of you who are new to Fraternities we have compiled a glossary of common terms you might come across when dealing with a member of our Chapter. The definitions provided are applicable to the Upsilon-Eta Chapter and may not cover all meanings of the terms used

Fraternity
A social organization of male students typically identified by Greek letters, bonded together by a common set of ideals, priciples, and aspirations
RCB
Red Carnation Ball; A year end celebration of a Chapters accomplishments, normally held at the end of March. Typically a formal dinner and awards ceremony followed by a dance.
RUSH
The act of searching out and recruiting new members to join the Fraternity. Although this is an ongoing process, it most often occurs during the first few weeks of a school's semester.
Prospect
Any male student who is currently not a member of another social Fraternity and has been identified by one of the active members. A man is typicially reffered to as a prospect once their name and contact information is obtained by the Chapter.
MQB
Membership Quality Board - A panel of 5 members who deal with chapter standards and interview prospects who are offered an interview. Prospects may often here a member refer to their interview as an "MQB".
Bid
If a prospect passes their interview they are offered a chance to try out for membership (a bid) through the pledging process.
Pledge/Candidate/Goomba
Once a prospect passes their MQB and accepts their bid, they are considered a Candidate. They are responsible for paying their Candidate fee prior to starting education and can often be identified by their pledge pin.
Induction
This is a formal ceremony that signifies a prospects transition into becoming a Candidate. During this ceremony the Chapter makes a promise to uphold their obligations to the Candidates and the Candidates make a promise back to the Chapter.
Initiation
A formal ceremony where Candidates become full members of the Chapter. This is often a 3 day event which involves the whole Chapter.
Retreat
At least once a year, the Chapter will meet for a weekend at an offcampus location to plan out events and set goals for the comming year.
Members Badge
The Members Badge is worn during formal events by full members of TKE. This pin is given to new members once they are initiated into the bond.
Pledge Pin
A pin worn by TKE Candidates above their heart. The pin is silver and cherry in colour and is an equalateral triangle.
